Copic Color Codes and the Pantone Color System

PANTONE is the definitive international matching system and reference guide for selecting, specifying, matching and controlling ink colours. It is used extensively by Designers, Architects, Printers and Manufacturers for the purpose of determining an exact match for colours. A quick reference guide has been provided via the hyperlink below to give customers the opportunity to cross-reference the Copic Colour Codes against the Pantone Colour Matching System. Show Chart

How do I refill a Copic Marker? media?

Yes.  Many artists use a combination of markers, ink and colored pencils.

Can I use Copic Markers on glass, plastic and metal?

The characteristics of a surface is what determines whether the marker will adhere.  Many surfaces are suitable but the best way to find out is to test it!

What are the best skin colors?

The color of skin is wide and varied.  For an orange/peach skin it is recommended that you use YR00 and YR20.  For a pinker skin, try R00 for a base color, R000 for highlights and R02 for shadows.  For a neutral skin, E00 or E01 for midtones, E000 for highlights and E02 for shadows.  E21 and E51 are also popular for skin midtones.

Why should I photocopy my work?

It is recommended that you photocopy pencil or line drawings onto high quality marker paper before rendering.  This helps to preserve your original especially if you make a mistake.  Copic markers will smear pencil and some ink pens.  We recommend the use of Copic multiliners.

What are multiliners?

Multiliners are inking pens for outlining marker drawings.  They are black pigment based and are waterproof.  They are not refillable.

How does the color-number system work?

The first letter stands for the color family - R = Red, E=Earth, BV=Blue/Violet and so on

The last number indicates how dark the marker is.  R59 would be darker than R08 but R08 would be darker than R20.

The middle number is the color tone or brightness/darkness.

When shading an object, try to use two colors of the same color family - the lighter one for midtones and the darker one for shadows.  The last number, ideally, should be within 1-3 of each other and the middle numbers as close as possible if not the same.

How light fast are COPIC markers?

Like other alcohol based markers, many colors will fade if exposed to light for extended periods of time.  To preserve your art work it is recommended that you make colored copies from the originals.

If you do wish to display your original image then use a clear plastic folder for storage.  This will assist in blocking out harmful UV rays though protected drawings will eventually start to fade.

Will the markers dry out?

Properly stored  these markers will last for many years.  Always recap the markers when not in use.  Extensive use of the airbrush attachment may dry out the very tip of the marker especially if too much air pressure is used.  The marker can be restored to full functionality by replacing the nib and refilling the marker.

How do you get the air brush affect using a COPIC marker?

Both Copic markers and Sketch Markers can be used with our special Airbrush System.  This operates by blowing compressed air over the broad nib resulting in a soft-edged airbrushed look.  See our catalogue for a full range of airbrush accessories.  All come with full instructions.
